1. General provisions
1.1. The BF Designer software uses programs, libraries and neural network models of other right holders (hereinafter "third-party components"). They are not covered by the license for the BF Designer software: each of them is governed by the terms of its own license.
1.2. A User who downloads and uses a third-party component must comply with its license, including any restrictions on commercial use.
1.3. This document is maintained by Individual Entrepreneur Andrey Vladimirovich Shkil (INN 561017656972, OGRNIP 325565800076010; hereinafter "the Licensor"). Questions may be sent to legal@blenderfamily.com.
2. FFmpeg
2.1. What it is. FFmpeg is a separate program for reading, writing and transcoding video and audio. BF Designer uses it for proxy files, software export to H.264 and H.265, as a fallback when hardware encoding fails, and for voice recording in "Feedback".
2.2. How it is distributed. FFmpeg is not included in the BF Designer installer. It is downloaded by the software from the Licensor's server (license.blenderfamily.com) upon the User's action. The text of the GPLv3 license is located next to the build archive on the server. Build: FFmpeg version N-126755-g52f05ac780 (commit 52f05ac780); BtbN FFmpeg-Builds build, win64-gpl variant, tag autobuild-2026-09-22-13-18 (commit 3e6685eda92f9288c15ac320139622dcedca09a4). This is the build for Windows. The macOS version of BF Designer has not been released as of the date of this version; upon its release, the FFmpeg build for macOS, its license and the source code address will be specified in a new version of this document.
2.3. Separate process. FFmpeg is not built into the code of BF Designer: the software runs it as a separate process and exchanges files and data with it. The FFmpeg license does not extend to the BF Designer software, and the BF Designer license does not extend to FFmpeg.
2.4. License. The build was compiled with the --enable-version3 option and contains components under the GNU General Public License (x264, x265 and others); therefore it is distributed under the GNU General Public License version 3 or later (GPL-3.0-or-later). Full text of the license: https://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-3.0.html; a copy is located next to the build archive on the server.
2.5. User rights. The User may run, study, modify and distribute FFmpeg, and may also replace the build downloaded by the software with another FFmpeg build — under the terms of GPLv3. The restrictions of the License Agreement do not apply to FFmpeg.
2.6. Source code. The complete source code corresponding to this build is placed on the Licensor's server, next to the build archive, free of charge and without registration:
- the FFmpeg source code of the commit from which the build was made;
- the source code of all compiled-in libraries in the same versions (including x264, x265, libvpx, SVT-AV1; the full list with versions is in the SOURCES.txt file);
- the BtbN build scripts used to produce the build.
Address: https://license.blenderfamily.com/assets/ffmpeg/source/ The source code is available for as long as the Licensor distributes this build, and for at least three years after its distribution ends.
2.7. FFmpeg is a trademark of Fabrice Bellard. The right holders of FFmpeg are not affiliated with BF Designer and do not endorse it.
2.8. Patents. The build includes encoders and decoders for the H.264/AVC and H.265/HEVC formats (including x264 and x265). The encoding methods of these formats are protected by patents in a number of countries. The GPLv3 license and this document concern copyright and do not grant patent licenses; the Licensor neither acquires nor conveys them. A User who needs a patent license in their country to use these formats obtains it on their own.
3. Local neural network models
3.1. Models are not included in the installer. The software downloads them at the User's command from huggingface.co and, before downloading, shows the model card: the right holder, the license with a link, and whether commercial use is permitted. The model weights run on the User's computer.
3.2. For all models that the software offers to download as of the date of this version, the licenses permit commercial use of the results. The conditions of these licenses (Apache-2.0, MIT, BSD-3-Clause) — preserving the copyright notices and the license text — are fulfilled in the THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.txt file (clause 4.3).
| Model | Purpose in the software | Right holder | License | Commercial use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Qwen-Image 2512 | Canvas: text-to-image generation | Alibaba Cloud, Qwen team (Qwen/Qwen-Image-2512; text encoder Qwen2.5-VL-7B-Instruct) | Apache-2.0 | Permitted |
| Z-Image Turbo | Canvas: fast draft generator | Tongyi Lab, Alibaba (Tongyi-MAI/Z-Image-Turbo); text encoder — Qwen team | Apache-2.0 | Permitted |
| Qwen-Image-Edit 2511 (fill and extension) | Canvas: generative fill and extension by mask | Alibaba Cloud, Qwen team (Qwen/Qwen-Image-Edit-2511) | Apache-2.0 | Permitted |
| BiRefNet — general, portrait, matting | Canvas: background removal | Peng Zheng and co-authors (ZhengPeng7/BiRefNet); ONNX conversion — third-party authors under the same license | MIT | Permitted |
| Real-ESRGAN — compact network and x4plus | Canvas: 2x and 4x image upscaling | Xintao Wang and co-authors (xinntao/Real-ESRGAN); ONNX conversion — third-party authors under the same license | BSD-3-Clause | Permitted; the authors' names may not be used for advertising without their permission |
| Depth Anything V2 Small | Canvas: depth map for the "Depth Blur" effect | Authors of Depth Anything V2 (HKU and TikTok; depth-anything/Depth-Anything-V2-Small) | Apache-2.0 | Permitted |
| Qwen 3.5 9B | AI assistant "Alyosha" locally (graphics cards up to ~12 GB) | Alibaba Cloud, Qwen team (Qwen/Qwen3.5-9B) | Apache-2.0 | Permitted |
| Qwen 3.6 27B | AI assistant "Alyosha" locally (graphics cards of ~20 GB and above) | Alibaba Cloud, Qwen team (Qwen/Qwen3.6-27B) | Apache-2.0 | Permitted |
3.3. The software does not offer models with non-commercial licenses. In particular, RMBG (BRIA, CC BY-NC 4.0), Depth Anything V2 Base and Large (CC BY-NC 4.0), 4x-UltraSharp (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0) and SAM 3 / SAM 3.1 (Meta, SAM License) are not used; earlier versions of SAM were released under Apache-2.0 but are not used in the software either. If in the future the software offers a model with restrictions, the card shown before downloading will warn of this, and this document will be supplemented.
3.4. Helper programs and components not included in the installer: the software downloads them at the User's command, and WebView2 is downloaded by the installer during installation if it is not present in the system:
| Program | Purpose | Downloaded from | Right holder and license |
|---|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg | Video and audio: proxies, rendering, export | The Licensor's server (Section 2) | GPL-3.0-or-later (Section 2) |
| llama.cpp (llama-server) | Local language model of the assistant | The Licensor's server; fallback source — github.com/ggml-org/llama.cpp | Authors of llama.cpp; MIT |
| stable-diffusion.cpp (sd-cli) | Local image generation | The Licensor's server; fallback source — github.com/leejet/stable-diffusion.cpp | Authors of stable-diffusion.cpp; MIT |
| ONNX Runtime (DirectML) | Engine for local image models (background, depth, upscaling) | The Licensor's server — the Microsoft.ML.OnnxRuntime.DirectML package, unmodified | Microsoft; MIT |
| DirectML | GPU acceleration of ONNX Runtime | The Licensor's server — the Microsoft.AI.DirectML package, unmodified; fallback source — nuget.org | Microsoft; Microsoft Software License Terms — a proprietary license: distributed only as part of applications, unmodified, with Microsoft's notices preserved; the source code is not open |
| Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime | Rendering the software's interface (Tauri) | Downloaded by the software installer from Microsoft's servers if not yet installed in Windows | Microsoft; Microsoft's license for the WebView2 Runtime — proprietary; installed as a Windows system component |
The Licensor distributes the helper programs from its own server unmodified, together with the texts of their licenses, for the operation of BF Designer and does not offer them as standalone products. This does not limit the rights granted by the licenses of these programs: the User may use and distribute FFmpeg, llama.cpp and stable-diffusion.cpp on the terms of their licenses (Section 2, clause 1.2); the restrictions on DirectML and WebView2 are set by Microsoft's licenses. When downloading from the Licensor's server, the User's IP address is recorded in the web server log (Policy, clause 5.4). Models are downloaded directly from huggingface.co; the Licensor does not distribute them and receives no data about the download.
4. Software libraries
4.1. As of the date of this version, the BF Designer installer includes 483 third-party components: 396 Rust libraries, 85 npm packages and 2 fonts. All of them are under permissive licenses (MIT, Apache-2.0, BSD, ISC, Zlib, Unicode-3.0, BSL-1.0, CC0, 0BSD and combinations thereof), except those listed in clause 4.2. The installer contains no components under GPL, LGPL or AGPL, or under licenses prohibiting commercial use.
4.2. Components with special conditions:
| Component | Where used | License | Condition and how it is fulfilled |
|---|---|---|---|
| @blocknote/core, @blocknote/mantine, @blocknote/react | "Notes" editor | MPL-2.0 | File-level copyleft: only modified files of the component itself must be disclosed; the license does not affect the rest of the software. The components are used without modifications; the license text is included |
| cssparser, cssparser-macros, selectors, dtoa-short, option-ext | Rust libraries, used via Tauri | MPL-2.0 | Same as above |
| Golos Text and Unbounded fonts | Software interface | OFL-1.1 | The font may not be sold separately from the software; the notice and the license text are included |
4.3. The full list of components with versions, right holders and license texts is in the THIRD-PARTY-NOTICES.txt file, which is included in the installer, can be opened from Settings → Documents and is published at license.blenderfamily.com/legal/third-party. The file is generated automatically at each build of the software and is updated together with it.
